HSE and sustainable development, a major concern

Stick to sustainable development principles, Sonatrach reconciles the Group's economic growth with its commitment in favour of safety of men and property.
It is also committed to reduce the impact of its activities on the health of employees and neighbouring populations and facilities.

Several actions have been undertaken to reduce and eliminate Sonatrach's activities' impact on environment, particularly in reducing emission of greenhouse effect gas and any other polluter in the Atmosphere. Thus significant investments have been made to reduce gas flaring. Although the volume of produced flaring gas has quadrupled in 30 years, the ratio of associated flared gas out of produced gas has moved from 80% in 1970 to 7% in 2007. Sonatrach targets elimination of the majority of gas flaring starting from 2010.

To reduce CO2 emission, Sonatrach, in partnership with BP and StatoilHydro, re-injects CO2 in the Krechab area in the field of In Salah.

For a long time, sustainable development has been a key principle and a strategic target for Sonatrach. It is also a responsible and materialized commitment particularly towards future generations.

Sonatrach's desire to promote the fields of employees and facilities' safety as well as environment protection to the level of the company's major concerns is depicted through the creation, in 2001, of a central management for HSE. It is integrated in the strategic decision making process of
